I installed Lubuntu in a VM using the 220117 ISO. First two observations not only related to input methods:

1. The installer somehow sensed that I'm in Sweden, so the installation happened in Swedish without me selecting it explicitly, the Swedish keyboard layout was automatically suggested, and at first login I saw that the locale was Swedish. However, no Swedish language packs were there, which means that the UI was only partially Swedish. (Translations for packages in Ubuntu's main are not there.)

2. No Swedish language support, such as spellchecking, had been installed.

Both those things tell us that the installer does not make use of the check-language-support command. I really think it should do so. The language-selector-common package, which provides that command, is already seeded.

An input method related consequence of this is that even if you do e.g. a Chinese installation, the stuff needed for inputting Chinese is not there at first login.

Anyway, you can enable input methods post login. These are two tests I accomplished:

Chinese
-------

1. sudo apt install fcitx5 fcitx5-pinyin

2. Relogin

3. Right click the "Input Method" icon, select Configure, and add Pinyin.

4. Open FeatherPad, switch to Pinyin with Ctrl+Space, and input Chinese.

Comment: This worked smoothly without issues.


Japanese
--------

1. sudo apt install ibus-mozc mozc-utils-gui

2. Relogin

3. Right click the IBus icon, select Preferences, and add Mozc.

4. Open FeatherPad, switch to Mozc with the IBus icon, select Hiragana, and input Japanese.

Comment: This worked, but with certain issues. The IBus icon didn't behave as expected, and kind of hanged. Maybe fcitx5 works better with Lubuntu. Or maybe there is more into it to make IBus work smoothly...
