Unity is designed to preserve space in the smaller dimension, which is why the launcher is on the bottom in portrait and the side on landscape.

This has the added bonus of looking like a traditional Android launcher when holding it like a phone, but then look like desktop Unity when holding in sideways.

Dragging down the top panel, like you do for notifications in Android, is like pressing F10 in that it activates the indicator menus. On phones, these are full-screen rather than GTK menus.

Swiping left and right flips between the indicators, just like right and left keyboard arrows do on the desktop.

It would be best if we can either have F10/drag down bring up the last viewed indicator, the first one that is hilighted, or at the very least default it to the message indicator every time.
